Pilot Aftermarket CV joints:
Since Honda wants $400 an axle, I have been looking into finding a different source for a long travel spare.
The NTN part #s on the CV joints does NOT just match up to a new part off the shelf. NTN also does not sell to anyone except OEM manufactures apparantly also. If anyone knows otherwise, please let me know.
So, off to the CV shop. After pouring through the catalogs and taking measurements, we may have found some very close. The outer one will cost $40 and require some reshaping on the dust seal area on the lathe. The inner one(which is available from Honda for $215) will be $52 but is slightly long on the splined section, which can also be trimmed off.
My splines are getting well worn on the inner joint and I alsways like to have spare everything.
Update:
I picked up my CV joints today and took some quick measurements. The inner one uses a 3 roller system that is different than the ball and cage style that Honda uses. The CV man assures me it is a strong design. The length of the inner joint was going to be trimmed but now that I look at it, it may work as is because the extra length of the shaft is made up in the cup which is shorter. I will have to take careful measurements to make sure the plunge does not destroy the CV. The outer joint looks to only require a trimming on the lathe for the dust seal surface. No big deal.
The joints both slide onto my 4x4 Tuff LT Axles perfectly.
Both joints came with boots, grease, clamps, and required circlips. $80 out the door for both of them. When I make more measurements and do some testing, I will post the part numbers.

Update 8/16/2005
I wanted to get some measurements of the angles the stock CVs see:
